'Silver surfers' show they have a golden touch
A 90-YEAR-OLD who had never touched a computer is one of Freebridge Community
Housing's enthusiastic band of novice "silver surfers."
A ten week course, Into IT, was arranged for interested tenants of Freebridge sheltered
housing schemes with the help of funding from Age Concern and Norfolk County Council.
One of the star students was Joan Stubbs, of Windsor Park, Lynn, who now confidently
sends emails to her son in the Philippines. Freebridge spokesman Isabella Bishop said:
"Joan is 90 and had never touched a computer in her life. She is tickled pink and so
enthusiastic to learn more."
Mrs Stubbs uses a shared computer built into a desk in the communal area of the home but
Isabella said: "A couple of the other tenants went out and bought their own laptops."
The course was such a success that others are planned, if funding can be found. The idea came
from a tenants' group, Sheltered United, and the successful students received their
Certificates of Achievement from the chairman, Mr David Barlow, and his wife, Diane.
Tuition was provided by Jon Wells of PC Help.
